Delhi to Morni Hills & Tikkar Tal
Morni Hills, just above Panchkula, is the only hill station in Haryana — a low Shivalik ridge of pine and scrub topping out around 1,220 m. In a fold below it sit the Tikkar Taal lakes (a larger and a smaller, joined by a causeway), and on the ridge is the small Morni fort. It is close, it is easy, and it makes a good first ride into hills.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 520–580 km
- Riding time
- 5–6 hours each way — mostly fast highway, then a short hill climb
- Nights
- One night
- Start point
- Delhi (via Karnal and Panchkula)
- Highest point
- About 1,220 m on the Morni ridge
- Difficulty
- Easy. Fast four-lane highway then a short, well-surfaced hill road. A sound first-hills ride.
- Surface
- NH-44 to Panchkula is four-lane; the Panchkula–Morni road is a narrow but sound hill road with tight bends near the top
- Best season
- October to March for clear, cool weather. April to June is hot on the approach; the monsoon greens the hills but brings small slips and leeches to the Morni road.
The ride
Delhi → Karnal → Panchkula on NH-44, then the hill road up to Morni. It is a half-day ride at most — the point is the evening and morning on the ridge, not the distance.
At Morni: the two Tikkar Taal lakes with a short walk and boating, the Morni fort (Thakurdwara) on the ridge, a pheasant and deer breeding centre, and the quiet back-road toward Tipra and the Himachal border. The Kalesar forest and Nada Sahib gurdwara are close if you want to extend.
Day by day
Delhi to Morni
Delhi → Karnal → Panchkula → Morni (5–6 hours with stops). Settle on the ridge; evening at the lakes.
Morni ridge and Tikkar Taal
The fort, the lakes, the breeding centre and the back-roads, then start home. An easy day either way.
Morni to Delhi
Down to Panchkula and the fast highway home. Beat the Sunday-evening NH-44 traffic by leaving mid-afternoon.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — NH-44 and Panchkula are well served.
- Fill up in Panchkula before the hill road; Morni village has only a small, unreliable pump.
- Morni has a Haryana Tourism complex at the lakes and a few guesthouses and farm-stays on the ridge. Weekends are busier than midweek. Carry some cash for the smaller places.
Road & conditions
NH-44 to Panchkula is fast four-lane with the usual truck traffic and toll plazas. The Panchkula–Morni road is a narrow but well-surfaced hill road, with tight bends and a few steep pitches near the top. Nothing technical. Watch for weekend car traffic on the lake road and monkeys on the fort stretch.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- No fuel gap worth planning around.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.
Best time to ride
October to March is the window — clear, cool days and cold nights on the ridge. April to June is hot on the highway and hazy. The monsoon makes the hills green and the lakes full but brings small slips and leeches to the Morni road.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the ridge evening and cash. Nothing else — this is an easy one.
Ride this with a group
We run Morni and Tikkar Tal as an easy overnight first-hills ride — a short highway run, an evening on the ridge, and a lakeshore clean-up as the service action.
