Delhi to Kanasar & Budher

Kanasar, about 25 km past Chakrata, is a clearing in deep deodar forest with a single enormous cedar — among the largest and oldest in India, its girth measured in metres. There is a Forest rest house, a small camping ground, and near-total quiet. On a ridge nearby, the Budher caves (locally ‘Miss Kitty caves’) are a natural limestone chamber system reached by a short forest walk. Cool air, tall trees, a fire at night — the calm end of a hill weekend.

At a glance

Round trip
About 700–760 km
Riding time
8–9 hours to Kanasar, split over the first day
Nights
Two nights
Start point
Delhi (via Saharanpur, Vikasnagar and Chakrata)
Highest point
About 2,300 m at Kanasar; the Budher ridge is a little higher
Difficulty
Moderate. Highway to Vikasnagar, then a long climbing hill road through Chakrata — narrow, winding, sound. A short forest walk to the caves.
Surface
Sealed to Kanasar; the Chakrata–Kanasar stretch is single-lane hill tar with broken patches and pine-needle slick in places. The Budher approach is a rough forest road then a footpath.
Best season
March to June and September to November. The forest is loveliest in spring and post-monsoon; winter brings snow to Chakrata and the Kanasar road can close; the monsoon slips the hill road and makes the cave walk treacherous.
Permits
Chakrata town has an Inner Line history and some spurs need a permit; Kanasar and Budher do not. Chakrata cantonment areas are army-restricted — do not photograph installations.

The ride

Delhi → Saharanpur → Vikasnagar → Kalsi → Chakrata, a long steady climb on a narrow hill road, then on through forest to Kanasar. It is a full first day — break the plains section at Saharanpur and aim to be climbing above Kalsi by early afternoon.

Base at the Kanasar rest house or camp. Walk to the giant deodar, and ride/walk the forest track to the Budher caves (carry a torch and go with someone who knows the entrance). Deoban, a high forest knoll above Chakrata with a colonial-era observatory hut and long Himalayan views, is an easy add on the way in or out.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Kanasar

The long day: plains to Vikasnagar, then climb through Kalsi and Chakrata to Kanasar (8–9 hours with stops). Set up camp; evening among the deodars.

  2. Kanasar, Deoban and Budher

A slow local day — the giant deodar, the Budher caves walk, and a ride up to Deoban for the view. Second night at Kanasar.

  3. Kanasar to Delhi

An early start down the hill road to beat the traffic through Chakrata and Kalsi, then the plains run home — a long but downhill-then-flat day.

Fuel & services

  • Fill up at Vikasnagar or Kalsi before the climb.
  • Chakrata has a pump but it is small and can be dry — do not rely on it. Kanasar and Budher have no fuel. From Kalsi to Kanasar and back to Kalsi is roughly 130–150 km of hill riding; top up at Kalsi and, if you can, at Chakrata, and carry 3–5 litres of spare for the group.
  • Kanasar has a Forest rest house (book through the Chakrata forest office) and a small private camp; Chakrata has guesthouses and army-run options. Food is simple — the camp kitchen or Chakrata's dhabas. Carry cash; there is no ATM past Vikasnagar you should trust.

Road & conditions

Plains to Vikasnagar are fast and open. From Kalsi the road climbs steeply and continuously to Chakrata — narrow, blind hairpins, some broken tar, army convoys and timber trucks. Past Chakrata to Kanasar it is single-lane through forest with pine-needle slick, fallen branches after wind, and stretches with no barrier. The Budher forest road is rough dirt; the cave path is steep and slippery. Ride the hill sections slowly and never at night — there is no lighting and animals are on the road.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

Spring (March to June) for green forest and mild days, and post-monsoon (mid-September to November) for clear air and the first cold nights. Winter (December to February) brings snow to Chakrata and the Kanasar road frequently closes — only attempt it with local confirmation and cold-weather kit. Avoid the monsoon: the Kalsi–Chakrata road slips badly, the forest track to Budher is a mudslide, and the cave floods.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a proper warm layer and a sleeping bag rated to near-freezing for the camp, a head-torch for the cave, sturdy shoes with grip, a rain shell, spare fuel for the group, and cash. Nothing technical on the bike, but the hill road demands full attention.

Chakrata is a sensitive cantonment Stay on the public road through the town, do not photograph army installations or personnel, and carry ID for the group. Ask locally before riding any spur road off the Chakrata–Kanasar route — some are restricted.
The ROAR service stop on this route. The Kanasar camping ground and the Budher cave mouth collect visitor litter — bottles, wrappers, abandoned camp waste — and the forest has no collection. We run a clean-up of the camp clearing and the cave approach and carry everything down to the Chakrata municipal point.

Ride this with a group

We run Kanasar as a two-night forest weekend — a long climbing ride past Chakrata, a camp under a giant deodar, a limestone cave, the Deoban view, and a forest clean-up as the service action. The quiet, cool end of a hill trip.
