Delhi to George Everest & Benog
West of Mussoorie's crowded centre, a quiet ridge road runs out past Cloud's End to Park Estate — the ruined house and observatory of Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India, with the Doon valley on one side and the snow line on the other. Alongside is the small Benog Wildlife Sanctuary (khalij pheasant, mountain quail country) and the Jwala Devi temple on Benog Tibba. It is an easy hill weekend that uses Mussoorie only for a bed and skips the Mall Road entirely.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 570–630 km
- Riding time
- 6.5–7.5 hours each way
- Nights
- One night
- Start point
- Delhi (via Dehradun and Mussoorie)
- Highest point
- About 2,300 m at George Everest / Benog Tibba
- Difficulty
- Easy. Highway to Dehradun, the Mussoorie climb, then a short quiet ridge road; a rough last km to the George Everest house and a short walk to Benog Tibba.
- Surface
- Sealed to near the George Everest house, then a broken/gravel final stretch. The ridge road past Cloud's End is single-lane hill tar, lightly used.
- Best season
- September to June. Post-monsoon and spring give the clearest snow views from the ridge; winter is cold and can bring light snow but the road usually stays open; the monsoon is misty with slips on the approach and no view at all.
The ride
Delhi → Dehradun → Mussoorie, then instead of the Mall, turn west past the Library end toward Hathipaon and Cloud's End. A quiet ridge road runs out to Park Estate and the George Everest house, recently partly restored, with a car park a short walk below.
Nearby: the Benog Wildlife Sanctuary gate and the walk up Benog Tibba to the Jwala Devi temple, and the historic Cloud's End guest house (one of Mussoorie's oldest buildings). Everything is within a few km of the ridge and almost none of it sees the Mall Road crowd.
Day by day
Delhi to Mussoorie's west ridge
Highway to Dehradun and up to Mussoorie (6.5–7.5 hours). Ride straight through to the Hathipaon ridge for the George Everest house at golden hour; night at a west-end guest house or Cloud's End.
Benog and back
The Benog Tibba / Jwala Devi walk in the cool morning, a slow ridge loop, then down through Mussoorie and Dehradun to the plains — an easy day. Leave the ridge early to clear Mussoorie before the day-tripper traffic.
Fuel & services
- Fill up in Dehradun or at the pump on the Mussoorie approach.
- The west ridge has no fuel; the loop from Mussoorie out to George Everest, Benog and back is only 25–35 km, so a normal tank is plenty. No spare needed.
- Stay at a Hathipaon / Library-end guest house or the historic Cloud's End; the town has every price range. Food is easy in Mussoorie. Cards work in town; carry a little cash for the ridge.
Road & conditions
The plains and Dehradun approach are straightforward. The Mussoorie climb is busy, especially at weekends and in the summer season — ride it patiently. The west ridge road past the Library end and Cloud's End is single-lane hill tar, lightly trafficked, with the usual blind bends and edge damage. The final approach to the George Everest house is broken tar and gravel — slow first-gear riding, or park and walk the last bit. The Benog Tibba path is a proper walk, not rideable.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
September to June. October, November and the March–May window give the sharpest snow-peak views from the ridge and comfortable walking. Winter (December–February) is cold and can bring a dusting of snow, but the road normally stays open — check locally after a storm. The monsoon closes the view down completely and slips the approach roads; there is little point going then.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the ridge evening and morning, walking shoes for Benog Tibba, and a little cash. Nothing technical; the only rough riding is the last km to the house.
Ride this with a group
We run this as an easy one-night ride to the quiet side of Mussoorie — the ridge road past Cloud's End, a surveyor's ruined house with a huge view, a small wildlife sanctuary, and a ridge clean-up as the service action. No Mall Road.
