Delhi to the Aglar Valley

Behind Mussoorie, the Aglar river runs through a deep, terraced farming valley that most riders never see — Nainbagh, Thatyur and a string of hamlets on a clear, cool river with a reputation for mahseer and trout. There are a few riverside camps, homestays in the villages, and the lower trailheads for Nag Tibba within reach. It is a moderate weekend for people who want a river, terraced fields and near silence, reached over the Mussoorie ridge and down the far side.

Round trip
About 610–670 km
Riding time
7–8 hours each way
Nights
Two nights
Start point
Delhi (via Dehradun and Mussoorie, or via Kempty and Nainbagh)
Highest point
About 2,200 m on the Mussoorie ridge; the valley floor is around 1,300 m
Difficulty
Moderate. Highway, the Mussoorie climb, then a long narrow descent to the river and valley roads with rough patches.
Surface
Sealed throughout but the Kempty–Nainbagh–Thatyur road is single-lane hill tar with broken sections, gravel and a seasonal river crossing.
Best season
September to June. Post-monsoon runs the river clear and full; winter is cold in the valley but rideable; spring is green. The monsoon raises the Aglar dangerously, slips the descent road and floods the crossings.

The ride

Two ways in: over Mussoorie and down past Suwakholi, or the shorter, rougher line via Kempty Falls and down to Nainbagh. Either way you drop a long way to the Aglar, then follow the valley road through Thatyur and the farming hamlets.

In the valley: camps and pools on the river, village homestays, terraced-field walks, and the lower Nag Tibba approaches from Pantwari or Devalsari if you want to add a short trek. It is a place to slow down — there are no sights, just the river and the fields.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to the Aglar

Highway to Dehradun, up through Mussoorie or Kempty, and the long descent to the Aglar valley near Nainbagh (7–8 hours). Camp or homestay by the river.

  2. A valley day

A slow day — the river, a terraced-field walk, or a short push toward the lower Nag Tibba ridge. Bikes mostly rest. Second night in the valley.

  3. Aglar to Delhi

An early climb back over the ridge to beat the Mussoorie traffic, then Dehradun and the plains home — a long, mostly downhill-then-flat day.

Fuel & services

  • Fill up in Dehradun or at Mussoorie before the descent.
  • There is no fuel at Nainbagh, Thatyur or anywhere in the Aglar valley, and the nearest pumps are back at Mussoorie / Dehradun or over at Nowgaon (Yamuna valley). The in-and-around riding easily tops 80–100 km — start full and carry 5 litres of spare for the group.
  • The valley has riverside camps (seasonal) and village homestays; there are no hotels. Meals are with the camp or homestay. Carry cash; there is nothing past Mussoorie.

Road & conditions

Plains and Dehradun are easy; the Mussoorie / Kempty climb is busy and slow. The descent to the Aglar is long, narrow single-lane hill tar with broken sections, loose gravel on the bends and very little traffic — brakes and tyres matter here, ride it slow. The valley roads are rough in patches with a seasonal river crossing that can be knee-deep after rain. No night riding: unlit, animals on the road, and slips that are invisible in the dark.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

September to June. Late September to November is the sweet spot — the river runs clear and strong, the fields are green, nights are cold and clean. Winter is cold in the valley bottom but perfectly rideable in the day. Spring is pleasant. The monsoon is genuinely dangerous here — the Aglar rises fast, the descent road slips, and the crossings flood; do not attempt it.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer and a near-freezing sleeping bag for the riverside camp, grippy shoes for wet rock, swimwear and a quick-dry towel, insect repellent, spare fuel for the group, and cash. The descent road rewards good tyres and brakes.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The Aglar's camping bars and the roadside near the villages collect picnic and camp litter, and the river carries plastic down from the settlements above. We run a clean-up of one camping reach of the river and hand what we collect to the nearest panchayat collection point.

Ride this with a group

We run the Aglar as a two-night river weekend — over the Mussoorie ridge and down to a farming valley on a clear river, camps on the gravel, terraced-field walks, and a river clean-up as the service action. A place to do nothing, well.
