Delhi to Kasauli & Chail

Kasauli and Chail are two small former-princely and cantonment towns above the Solan hills — Kasauli a genuinely quiet colonial-era hill station with a small mall and pine-forest walks, and Chail across the valley with the world's highest cricket ground and a low-key royal palace. Neither pulls the crowds Shimla does, and both are close enough to pair in a single weekend.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Parwanoo → Kasauli, a short, pretty climb into a genuinely quiet cantonment town — the mall is small enough to walk end to end in ten minutes, and the pine-forest walks around Monkey Point give good views on a clear day.

Chail, a short ride across the valley, has the Chail Cricket Ground — the world's highest, built by the Maharaja of Patiala — and his low-key Chail Palace, now a heritage hotel you can walk the grounds of even if you're not staying there. Both towns are small enough to see properly in a relaxed weekend.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Kasauli

Delhi → Chandigarh → Parwanoo → Kasauli (6 hours). Walk the mall and Monkey Point in the afternoon light.

  2. Kasauli to Chail

Short ride to Chail. The cricket ground, the palace grounds, and a quiet pine-forest walk before heading back or staying a second night.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy the whole way — Panipat, Ambala, Chandigarh and Parwanoo all have pumps.
  • Kasauli and Chail both have small pumps; top up before the link road between them regardless.
  • Both towns have guesthouses and heritage stays across budgets; Chail Palace itself takes hotel bookings.

Road & conditions

Sealed and in good condition throughout, with short, easy hill climbs to both towns. The Kasauli–Chail link road is quiet and pleasant, a step down in traffic from the main Shimla highway it branches off from. Weekend traffic is noticeably lighter here than on the Shimla road proper.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

October to June is good. Post-monsoon and spring are the most pleasant; winter is cold with occasional light snow at Chail's altitude. The monsoon brings haze that dulls the views both towns are known for.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: nothing special. A warm layer for the evenings.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The Monkey Point trail at Kasauli and the grounds around Chail's cricket pitch collect light weekend litter. We run a short clean-up at both when the group visits.

Ride this with a group

We run Kasauli & Chail as an easy one-night pairing — two quiet cantonment towns most riders skip in favour of Shimla itself.
