Delhi to Mukteshwar
Mukteshwar sits at about 2,170 m on a Kumaon ridge that most riders drive past on the way to Nainital. It has a working Shiva temple with a genuinely wide Himalayan view, a natural rock arch called Chauli ki Jaali cut into the cliff edge, and a modest waterfall at Bhalugarh a short ride below the ridge — enough for an easy, uncrowded long weekend.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 700–740 km
- Riding time
- 8–9 hours each way
- Nights
- One night works; two is comfortable and lets you add Chauli ki Jaali and the waterfall unhurried
- Start point
- Delhi (via Kathgodam and Bhowali)
- Highest point
- About 2,170 m at the Mukteshwar temple ridge
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Good hill roads throughout; the last stretch to some viewpoints is narrow but sealed.
- Surface
- Sealed road all the way, including the Bhowali–Mukteshwar climb
- Best season
- October to June. Winter is cold and often crystal clear; spring brings orchard blossom; the monsoon hides the view.
The ride
Delhi → Rampur → Kathgodam → Bhowali → Mukteshwar, a straightforward hill climb on a narrower but well-kept road once you leave Bhowali. The ridge itself is small: a temple, a scatter of orchard homestays, and views that run from Nanda Devi to Trishul on a clear day.
Walk to the Mukteshwar Dham temple for the panorama, ride a short loop to Chauli ki Jaali, a natural rock arch on the cliff edge with its own long view, and drop down to Bhalugarh waterfall if the water is running. The orchard lanes around the ridge make for an easy, unhurried second day.
Day by day
Delhi to Mukteshwar
Delhi → Kathgodam → Bhowali → Mukteshwar (8–9 hours). Settle into an orchard stay and catch the temple viewpoint before dark if there's light left.
Chauli ki Jaali and the waterfall
Short rides to the rock arch and Bhalugarh waterfall, with the rest of the day free to walk the orchard lanes and the ridge.
Mukteshwar to Delhi
Down through Bhowali and Kathgodam to the plains. Leave early to beat the Delhi-bound traffic building through the afternoon.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is straightforward to Bhowali — Rampur, Kathgodam and Bhowali all have pumps.
- Mukteshwar itself has one small pump; top up at Bhowali to be safe.
- Mukteshwar has orchard homestays and guesthouses across budgets — book the view rooms ahead on weekends.
Road & conditions
Sealed throughout. The plains stretch to Kathgodam is easy but can be slow with traffic; the climb from Bhowali is a good, well-maintained hill road with steady bends. The last kilometre or two to some viewpoints and the temple car park narrows but stays paved. Weekend traffic builds up sharply from Friday evening, since this is now a well-known Kumaon weekend spot.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
October to June is generally good. Post-monsoon (October–November) gives the clearest Himalayan panorama; March–April brings orchard blossom. Winter is cold, often crystal clear, and occasionally snowy on the ridge. The monsoon months usually hide the view behind cloud.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the ridge, good shoes for the short walk to Chauli ki Jaali, and a camera for the panorama. Nothing technical.
