Delhi to Kanvashram

Kanvashram sits on the Malini river in sal forest about 14 km north of Kotdwar, at the very foot of the Garhwal hills. In tradition it is the hermitage of the sage Kanva, where Shakuntala raised her son Bharata — the boy after whom Bharat is named. There is a small temple, a research institute, a Forest rest house and a few riverside camps, ringed by forest that is genuine elephant country. It is an easy, low, green weekend — hills without the climb.

At a glance

Round trip
About 470–530 km
Riding time
5.5–6.5 hours each way
Nights
One night
Start point
Delhi (via Meerut, Bijnor and Najibabad)
Highest point
About 500 m at Kanvashram; the road stays in the sal-forest foothills
Difficulty
Easy. Plains and forest-edge highway, then a short quiet road up the Malini valley — no real climb.
Surface
Sealed throughout. The Bijnor–Najibabad stretch is patchy two-lane; the Kotdwar–Kanvashram road is narrow but sound with a few broken sections and a seasonal river causeway.
Best season
October to June. Post-monsoon and winter are clear and cool with a full river; spring is warm but pleasant by the water; the monsoon closes the causeway, raises the Malini fast and brings the forest roads alive with leeches and elephants.

The ride

Delhi → Meerut → Bijnor → Najibabad → Kotdwar — flat plains and forest-edge highway, then a short run north up the Malini valley to Kanvashram. The last stretch crosses the river on a low causeway that is impassable in spate.

At Kanvashram: the riverside temple and the small Shakuntala memorial, walks along the Malini's gravel bars, and the surrounding Lansdowne Forest Division sal woods. Sidhbali temple above Kotdwar and the climb to Lansdowne itself are easy adds if you want to turn it into two nights.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Kanvashram

Plains through Bijnor and Najibabad to Kotdwar (5–6 hours), then the short valley road to Kanvashram. Afternoon by the Malini; night at the rest house or a riverside camp.

  2. Kanvashram to Delhi

A slow river morning, then retrace — or climb to Lansdowne for lunch and views before dropping back to Kotdwar and the plains. An easy day either way.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Kotdwar — Meerut, Bijnor, Najibabad, Kotdwar all have pumps.
  • Top up at Kotdwar: Kanvashram has no fuel and the valley road plus any Lansdowne detour adds up. A normal tank is fine; no spare needed.
  • Kanvashram has a Forest / GMVN rest house and a couple of private riverside camps (seasonal — book ahead); Kotdwar has hotels. Food is simple camp and dhaba fare. Carry cash; the last reliable ATM is Kotdwar.

Road & conditions

The plains run through Bijnor and Najibabad is patchy two-lane with heavy sugar-cane-season truck and trolley traffic — slow and tiring rather than difficult. From Kotdwar the Malini valley road is narrow but sound, with a few broken sections and the seasonal causeway. Inside the forest, drive slowly and never after dark: this is an active elephant corridor and herds cross and linger on the road at dusk and dawn. Keep distance, cut the engine, and wait — do not rev or push past.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

October to June. October and November are ideal — the river is full and clear, the forest is washed and green, the air is cool. Winter mornings by the water are cold but bright. Spring is warm but the Malini keeps it comfortable. Avoid the monsoon: the causeway floods, the river rises fast enough to be dangerous, and the forest roads are thick with leeches and moving elephants.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the riverside night, swimwear and a quick-dry towel for the Malini pools, insect repellent, a torch, and cash. Nothing technical.

This is an elephant corridor Ride the forest stretches only in full daylight, at low speed, and be ready to stop and wait for herds to clear. Never come between a herd and the river, never ride at night, and keep camp food sealed and stored away from tents.
The ROAR service stop on this route. The Malini's gravel bars and the temple approach collect picnic and pilgrim litter, and the forest edge gathers plastic blown from the road. We run a clean-up of the river bank and the temple precinct and carry what we collect out to the Kotdwar municipal point.

Ride this with a group

We run Kanvashram as an easy one-night riverside weekend — a plains-and-forest ride past Kotdwar, a night on the Malini in the Shakuntala legend's own valley, and a river-bank clean-up as the service action. Hills without the climbing.
