Delhi to Kullu & Bijli Mahadev
Kullu sits in the middle of the Beas valley — an orchard town, and the setting for India's most distinctive Dussehra festival in autumn. Across the river, a short road and walk lead up a ridge to Bijli Mahadev, a Shiva temple at about 2,460 m that local tradition says draws lightning. It is a less crowded alternative to Manali, in the same valley.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,030–1,090 km
- Riding time
- About 10–12 hours each way
- Nights
- Three nights — two on the road, one in the valley for Bijli Mahadev
- Start point
- Delhi (via Chandigarh, Bilaspur and Mandi)
- Highest point
- About 2,460 m at Bijli Mahadev
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Long riding days; the last part is a short trek of a few kilometres from the road head.
- Surface
- Sealed highway to Kullu; a narrower hill road to the Bijli Mahadev road head, then a walk
- Best season
- March to June and September to November. Snow at the temple in winter; the monsoon can wash out the Beas valley road.
The ride
Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu, along the same highway as Manali, with the Beas gorge and its tunnels below Mandi. Kullu opens out into a broad, orchard-lined valley.
Cross the Beas at Kullu and ride up to the road head near Chansari, then walk a few kilometres up the ridge to the Bijli Mahadev temple, with views along the Kullu and Parvati valleys. The autumn Kullu Dussehra fills the town's ground with deity processions and is worth timing the ride for, if you like crowds.
Day by day
Delhi to Kullu
Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi → Kullu (10–12 hours). Start before sunrise, or split the day with a night at Mandi.
Bijli Mahadev
Ride to the road head early, walk up to the temple and back, and spend the afternoon in Kullu's old bazaar and temples.
Kullu to Delhi
Back down the Beas valley through Mandi and Chandigarh. A long day — leave early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy all the way to Kullu — Chandigarh, Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu have plenty of pumps.
- Fill up in Kullu before the Bijli Mahadev road; there are no pumps up the ridge.
- Kullu has stays for all budgets, from guesthouses to orchard resorts. Book ahead for Dussehra week.
Road & conditions
Sealed throughout to the road head. The Kiratpur–Mandi–Kullu highway is mostly four-lane with tunnels, but it runs along the Beas gorge where the road has washed out in recent monsoons — expect landslide delays and diversions from July to September. The Bijli Mahadev approach is a narrower hill road, and the last few kilometres are on foot. Check road status before you leave.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
March to June and September to November are the reliable windows. The Kullu Dussehra in October is spectacular and crowded. Winter brings snow to the temple and cold roads at altitude. The monsoon is the risky season.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: warm layers and a rain jacket for the Bijli Mahadev walk, trekking shoes with grip, and a torch if you plan to start the climb early.
