Delhi to Manali & Solang

Manali is the ride most riders start their Himalayan story with — a 2,050 m valley town at the head of the Beas, with Old Manali's cafes, the Hadimba temple in the deodars, and Solang Valley just above it. The Atal Tunnel now carries you through the Pir Panjal to Lahaul's dry side in minutes. It is a long haul from Delhi, and it rewards planning: split the ride, start early, and spend a full day on the valley itself.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali. From Chandigarh the highway climbs into the Shivalik foothills through tunnels and along the Beas gorge below Mandi. From Kullu the valley opens up, and Manali sits at its head.

In Manali, walk Old Manali, the Hadimba temple and the Vashisht hot-spring village, then ride up to Solang Valley, about 13 km from town. Beyond Solang the Atal Tunnel, roughly nine kilometres long, takes you under the Rohtang Pass to Sissu on Lahaul's side in a few minutes; the old Rohtang Pass road itself needs a permit and is open only in season.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Manali

Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi → Kullu → Manali (12–14 hours). Start before sunrise, or split the day with a night at Mandi.

  2. Old Manali, Solang and the Atal Tunnel

Walk Old Manali and the Hadimba temple, ride up to Solang, then take the Atal Tunnel through to Sissu and back if the day and traffic allow.

  3. Manali to Delhi

Back down the Beas valley to Kullu, Mandi and Chandigarh. A long day — an early start matters more on the return.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy all the way to Manali — Chandigarh, Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu and Manali all have plenty of pumps.
  • Top up in Manali before Solang and the tunnel; pumps are sparse beyond it on the Lahaul side.
  • Manali has every kind of stay from hostels to resorts. On peak weekends and holidays book well ahead and confirm parking.

Road & conditions

Sealed throughout. The Kiratpur–Mandi–Kullu highway is mostly four-lane with tunnels and long, fast sections, but it also runs along the Beas gorge where the road has washed out badly in recent monsoons — expect landslide delays and diversions from July to September. The Manali–Solang road is short and narrow, crowded at peak times. The Atal Tunnel is a toll road; access can be restricted after heavy snow. Check road status before you leave.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

March to June and September to November are the reliable windows. Winter brings snow to Solang and cold, sometimes icy roads at the upper end. The monsoon (July–September) is the risky season for the highway. Peak weekends in May–June are very crowded.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: warm layers and rain gear (the valley changes weather fast), grippy gloves for cold mornings, and a phone mount with a charger — this is a long navigation day.

The ROAR service stop on this route. Manali and Solang take huge visitor numbers, and litter builds up on the river banks and at the viewpoints. On group rides here, we pick up what we find and carry it out with us.
