Delhi to Mussoorie & Landour

Mussoorie earned its old colonial nickname honestly — a ridge-top hill station above Dehradun at about 2,000 m, with the Doon valley on one side and the first line of snow peaks on the other. Landour, the quieter cantonment above the main bazaar, keeps its old bookshops, bakeries and stone cottages largely intact, away from the weekend crowds below.

The ride

Delhi → Meerut → Dehradun → Mussoorie, a fast highway run followed by a short, well-known hill climb — this is one of the more straightforward weekend rides in the library, and correspondingly busy on weekends.

Skip the main Mall Road crush if you can and head straight for Landour: Char Dukan for tea, the old Landour bazaar with its century-old shops, and the walk around Lal Tibba for the best snow-peak views in the area. Camel's Back Road, on the Mussoorie side, is a good easy evening walk.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Mussoorie

Delhi → Meerut → Dehradun → Mussoorie (8–9 hours). Settle in Landour, away from the main bazaar traffic.

  2. Landour and the ridge

Walk Char Dukan and the old bazaar, then Lal Tibba for the snow-peak view. Camel's Back Road in the evening before heading down.

  3. Mussoorie to Delhi

Down through Dehradun and Meerut. Leave early to clear the plains before the afternoon heat and traffic build.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy the whole way — Meerut, Roorkee, Dehradun and Mussoorie all have pumps.
  • Mussoorie and Landour have hotels, heritage guesthouses and homestays across every budget.

Road & conditions

Sealed and in good condition throughout — one of the easiest hill climbs in the library. The highway to Dehradun is fast and straightforward; the climb to Mussoorie is well surfaced with steady bends. Weekend traffic is heavy on the Mussoorie approach and through the Mall Road area — Landour, a little further up, is noticeably calmer.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on any road-legal commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

October to June is good. October–November gives the clearest post-monsoon snow-line views; March–May is pleasant and green. Winter (December–February) is cold with occasional light snow on the ridge — atmospheric, but check road conditions after a snowfall. The monsoon is wet and often foggy.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for Landour evenings and good shoes for the bazaar walks. Nothing technical.

The ROAR service stop on this route. Camel's Back Road and the Lal Tibba viewpoint path collect heavy weekend litter given how popular this stretch is. We run a clean-up along both on our visits.

Ride this with a group

We run Mussoorie & Landour as an easy one-night weekend, based in the quieter Landour cantonment away from the Mall Road crowds.
