Delhi to Dagshai, Barog & Sanawar

Between Kalka and Shimla, the old Kalka–Shimla road and railway pass a string of quiet colonial places: Dagshai, a small cantonment laid out in 1847 with an old jail turned museum; Barog, a railway station beside the longest tunnel on the line; and Sanawar, home to one of India's oldest boarding schools. It is the historic foothill road at a slower pace, without the weekend crowd of Shimla or Kasauli.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Kalka → Dagshai and Barog. Past Kalka the road climbs into the Shivaliks alongside the narrow-gauge railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line, crossing under and over its bridges.

At Dagshai, walk the old cantonment lanes and visit the jail museum. Barog is known for its station beside Tunnel 33, the longest on the Kalka–Shimla line, and for the pine forest around it. Sanawar, nearby, is home to the Lawrence School, founded in the nineteenth century. Kasauli is close by, and has its own page.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Dagshai

Delhi → Chandigarh → Kalka → Dagshai (5–6 hours). Settle in and walk the cantonment in the evening.

  2. Barog and the railway

Ride to Barog for the station and the pine forest, walk along the tracks where it is safe, and spend the afternoon at Sanawar or Kasauli.

  3. Back to Delhi

Down through Kalka and Chandigarh to the Delhi highway. Leave by mid-morning.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy — Chandigarh, Kalka and Solan all have pumps.
  • There are no pumps in the cantonment lanes, but the distances are short.
  • Dagshai, Barog and Kasauli have small guesthouses and hotels; book ahead on weekends and in the peak summer months.

Road & conditions

Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Chandigarh highway is fast and busy with trucks and toll plazas; the road from Kalka runs alongside the railway and climbs through pine forest, with steady bends and some weekend traffic. Cantonment lanes are narrow, and some are restricted. Do not walk on the railway line itself — stay clear of the tracks.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Fuel gap
No fuel gap worth planning around.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.

Best time to ride

October to June is generally good. October–November and March–April are the clearest. Summers on the plains are hot, but the ridge stays mild. The monsoon brings fog and slips, and the light is poor for photography.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: comfortable shoes for the old cantonment lanes, a light jacket for the cool ridge evenings, and a camera for the railway bridges.

The ROAR service stop on this route. Heritage lanes and railway stations collect litter from weekend visitors. On group rides here, we pick up what we find at our stops and carry it out.
