Delhi to Rishikesh & Neelkanth
Rishikesh is where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills — pilgrim ghats and yoga ashrams on the river, forested ridges above it, and a winding road up to the Neelkanth Mahadev temple. It is the easiest introduction to the hills from Delhi: a short highway run, good roads, and enough to do that a single night is not a compromise.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 470–510 km
- Riding time
- About 5–6 hours each way
- Nights
- One night works; two lets you add Kunjapuri at sunrise and Neelkanth without a rush
- Start point
- Delhi (via Roorkee and Haridwar)
- Highest point
- About 1,676 m at the Kunjapuri Devi temple ridge
- Difficulty
- Easy. Good roads throughout; the Neelkanth and Kunjapuri roads are narrow, winding and forested.
- Surface
- Sealed road all the way, including the Neelkanth and Kunjapuri climbs
- Best season
- October to March. Cool and clear in winter; hot from April; the monsoon is wet and the Ganga runs high.
The ride
Delhi → Roorkee → Haridwar → Rishikesh. The plains run is fast; you can leave Delhi at dawn and be on the river ghats for lunch. Haridwar's Har ki Pauri and Rishikesh's Triveni Ghat both hold an evening Ganga aarti.
The forest road to Neelkanth Mahadev climbs about 30 km from Rishikesh to a hilltop Shiva temple. Kunjapuri Devi, on a ridge above the river, is the place to be at sunrise for the snow peaks. The ride passes through forest where elephants live, so keep an eye out at dawn and dusk.
Day by day
Delhi to Rishikesh
Delhi → Roorkee → Haridwar → Rishikesh (5–6 hours). Check in, walk the ghats and catch the evening aarti.
Neelkanth and Kunjapuri
Ride up to Kunjapuri for sunrise, then on to Neelkanth Mahadev. Return to the river in the afternoon.
Rishikesh to Delhi
Back through Haridwar and Roorkee. Leave by mid-morning; Sunday afternoons on the Delhi-bound highway can be slow.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — Meerut, Roorkee, Haridwar and Rishikesh all have plenty of pumps.
- Fill up in Rishikesh before the Neelkanth and Kunjapuri climbs; there are few pumps up there.
- Rishikesh has everything from budget hostels to riverside resorts. Much of the pilgrim core is vegetarian and dry — plan meals accordingly.
Road & conditions
Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Meerut–Roorkee highway is fast but busy with trucks and toll plazas; Haridwar–Rishikesh is a short, congested link on festival days. The Neelkanth road is narrow and winding through forest; watch for monkeys, stray cattle and, at dawn and dusk, elephants. Kunjapuri is a steep, twisting ridge road. On peak pilgrim weekends and the Kanwar season the Haridwar–Rishikesh stretch can be gridlocked.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- No fuel gap worth planning around.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.
Best time to ride
October to March is the comfortable window: cool, clear and dry. February–March is pleasant and green. April–June is hot and crowded. The monsoon (July–September) brings heavy rain and high water, and the rafting stretch is closed.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: modest clothes for temples and ghats, sandals or shoes that come off easily, and a light jacket for the sunrise ridge.
